Manhattan's West Village is known for its independent book shops and specialty stores, and one of my favorites is Bonnie Slotnick Cookbooks on West 10th Street. A cookbook publishing alum, Bonnie began the shop in 2000 and has grown the collection of used, rare and out-of-print cookbooks to several thousand titles.
The shop itself if so charming and very New York, every inch of available space brimming with books that run the gamut from 18th Century rarities to well-loved editions of Betty Crocker. There are vintage cooking magazines and culinary knickknacks, too. Sections are easy to browse, but Bonnie knows the stacks so well I generally just ask for her recommendations. She's also happy to track down specialty orders and ships all over the world.
A great gift idea for foodie friends and family: buy a book from Bonnie's shop and pair with flavored salt from Meadow over on Hudson Street, an artisan salt shop with dozens of options any at-home chef would love.
