When I'm traveling with my family or with a group of friends, I almost always opt to rent a house rather than stay in a hotel. It's such fun to see how other folks live, to step inside their spaces for a few days and get a sense of what everyday life in this new town or city is like. I travel to The Catskills a good deal and I've added The Bearsville Retreat to my list of spots to try on my next visit.
The Retreat is made up of two tree-ringed houses in the hamlet of Bearsville. Built in 1937 by a local artisan farmer, the houses have been recently renovated and furnished in modern-lodge style. It's set back from the road next to an old-world farm and fully fenced, which makes it great for kids and pets. Both of the houses have access to a heated, in-ground pool and hot tub. The houses also have cozy fireplaces with firewood and kindling provided. The Main House sleeps four and the Guest House sleeps two, and I think it would be great fun to rent our both houses for a group getaway. The Bearsville Retreat is just two miles from Woodstock Village Green and the shops and restaurants of downtown Woodstock, and it's also a short drive to hiking Overlook Mountain or skiing at Hunter Mountain. Be sure to book at table at The Bear Cafe for dinner on the river one night, and check the calendar at the Bearsville Theater for some of the region's best live music.
Here are a few more pictures of the property, and you can see rates and rental info here.
