I was awestruck the first time I saw this photo of the Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Washington. It's located just 45-minutes outside of Portland, Oregon, but its position within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area makes it feel a world away to me. The lodge has 175-acres for visitors to explore, and the activities list is one of the largest I've seen for one property. On my to-do list: hiking to the region's gorgeous waterfalls, horseback riding through the Gorge, and hitting the rapids on a whitewater rafting trip. For winter, the lodge is located a short drive away from four ski resorts and they can even arrange for a guided snow shoe trek with the Mount Saint Helens Institute around the volcano. Skamania also hosts a slew of activities at the lodge itself, from photography and painting classes to wine tastings.
And, because relaxing is important, too, there's a splurge-worthy spa and an outdoor hot tub for unwinding at the end of all this activity. At mealtime, head to The Cascade Dining Room, which hosts special dinner series throughout the month and a champagne brunch each Sunday. The 254 guest rooms all have great views of the surrounding mountains, and some also feature fireplaces, perfect for cozying up by in the colder months.
